Your Crystal Has Arrived… Now What? ✨
A Beginner’s Guide to Cleansing, Charging & Using Your Crystals
You’ve opened the parcel.
You’ve unwrapped the tissue.
And there it is…
Your beautiful new crystal. ✨
You admire it. Turn it over in your hand. Find the sparkly bits. Possibly hold it up to the light several times.
Then comes the question we hear all the time:
Now what do I actually do with it?
If you’re new to crystals, don’t worry. There are no complicated rules, no crystal police, and definitely no test at the end.
Here’s a simple beginner’s guide to cleansing, charging and using your crystals.
Step 1: Get to Know Your Crystal
Before doing anything else, take a moment to actually look at it.
Notice the colour, shape, texture and little details that make it unique.
Crystals are natural materials, so variations, inclusions, markings and imperfections are all part of their character.
You can also read about the traditional meaning associated with your crystal, but you don’t need to overthink it.
Sometimes you simply like a crystal because it looks beautiful.
That’s a perfectly good reason to own it.
How to Cleanse Crystals
Crystal cleansing is traditionally used as a way of refreshing or resetting a crystal before using it.
There are lots of different methods, and you definitely don’t need to do all of them.
Choose the one that feels easiest for you.
1. Use Smoke
One popular method is gently passing your crystal through smoke from incense, palo santo or a smudge stick.
You only need a few moments.
As always, use anything burning safely and never leave it unattended.
2. Use Moonlight 🌙
Moonlight is probably one of the easiest crystal cleansing and charging methods.
Simply place your crystals somewhere they can sit in the moonlight overnight.
A windowsill works perfectly.
And despite what social media might tell you…
It doesn’t have to be a full moon.
You can enjoy your crystals whenever you like.
3. Use Selenite
Selenite is often used by crystal collectors as a simple cleansing crystal.
You can place smaller crystals on or beside a selenite plate, bowl or piece overnight.
It’s especially handy if you have several crystals you want to cleanse at once.
4. Use Sound
Some people like using sound as part of their cleansing ritual.
This might include:
- singing bowls
- bells
- gentle music
- chimes
The idea is simply to create a calm little moment around your crystal.
Bonus points if it gives you an excuse to sit quietly for five minutes.
Be Careful With Water
You’ll often see people recommending water or salt water for cleansing crystals.
This is where things can get tricky.
Not every crystal is suitable for water.
Some can become damaged, dull, flaky or even begin to dissolve.
If you aren’t completely sure whether your crystal is water-safe, choose another method.
Moonlight, sound or smoke are much safer beginner options.
How to Charge Crystals ✨
Once your crystal is cleansed, some people like to “charge” it.
This is traditionally seen as giving your crystal a fresh energetic boost or connecting it with an intention.
Again, there’s no complicated process required.
Try Moonlight
Place your crystal somewhere safe overnight during the moon cycle.
Easy.
Try Morning Light
Some crystals can be placed in gentle morning sunlight for a short period.
However, strong sunlight can fade certain crystals over time, including some varieties of Amethyst.
If you’re unsure, keep things simple and use moonlight instead.
Set an Intention
You can also hold your crystal and think about what you’d like it to represent for you.
Maybe you want:
Calm.
Confidence.
Focus.
Motivation.
Love.
A fresh start.
It doesn’t need to be mystical or complicated.
Sometimes simply taking a quiet moment to decide what you want to focus on is useful in itself.
So… How Do You Actually Use Crystals?
This is the fun part.
There are loads of ways to enjoy crystals, and the best one is whichever fits naturally into your life.
Carry One With You
Pocket stones and small tumble stones are perfect for this.
Pop one in your:
- handbag
- work bag
- school bag
- gym bag
Just remember which pocket you put it in before doing the washing.
Trust us on that one.
Put Crystals Around Your Home 🏡
Crystals also make beautiful home décor.
Try placing them:
Beside your bed
For a peaceful little nighttime setup.
On your desk
Great if you like having something beautiful beside you while working.
Near the front door
A lovely way to display a statement crystal where you’ll see it often.
On shelves or coffee tables
Because sometimes a crystal’s main job is simply to look amazing.
And that is completely acceptable.
Create a Little Crystal Space
You don’t need a giant crystal cabinet.
Although we fully support that life choice.
Start small.
Choose a tray, shelf, bedside table or little corner of a room and arrange a few favourite crystals together.
Add candles, plants, books or anything else that makes the space feel like yours.
Meditate With Your Crystal
If meditation is your thing, hold a crystal while you sit quietly.
You don’t need to do anything special.
Simply hold it, breathe and enjoy a few minutes without notifications, emails or someone asking where you put something.
Honestly, that alone sounds pretty good.
Keep One on Your Desk
This is one of the easiest ways to enjoy crystals every day.
Choose something you love looking at and keep it beside your computer.
Popular desk choices often include:
Clear Quartz — traditionally associated with clarity and intention.
Citrine — often connected with optimism, confidence and abundance.
Fluorite — traditionally associated with concentration and focus.
Amethyst — a favourite for calm and peaceful spaces.
Whether or not you follow crystal meanings, they certainly make desks more interesting.
How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?
There isn’t a strict schedule.
Some people cleanse their crystals:
- when they first receive them
- once a month
- around the full moon
- after using them during meditation
- whenever they simply feel like doing it
You really don’t need another recurring task on your calendar.
If you enjoy the ritual, do it.
If your crystal has happily sat on your shelf for six months without being cleansed…
It will survive.
Do You Need to Set an Intention?
No.
But it can be fun.
If you bought a crystal because of its traditional meaning, you might like to connect it to something you’re working toward.
For example:
Rose Quartz
“I want to be kinder to myself.”
Carnelian
“I’m going to stop procrastinating and actually start.”
Amethyst
“I want to make more time to slow down.”
Green Aventurine
“I’m open to new opportunities.”
Clear Quartz
“I want more clarity around what comes next.”
Keep it simple.
This isn’t a legal contract with your crystal.
The Most Important Crystal Rule
There really isn’t one.
You don’t need to know every crystal meaning.
You don’t need an elaborate full-moon ritual.
You don’t need exactly seventeen crystals arranged in a perfect circle.
Your crystal collection should be something you enjoy.
Choose pieces you love.
Display them.
Carry them.
Learn about them.
Give them as gifts.
Or simply stare at them occasionally because they’re ridiculously pretty.
That works too.
